Press Release
Re-Elect Justice of the Peace John Payton Committee
January 4, 2010

(Collin County, Texas)   For the past nineteen years, Judge John Payton has honorably served Collin County as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 3, Place 2 and has announced that he will campaign for a fifth term to be decided in the November 2010 election.

Since 1991, Judge Payton has presided over, managed, and docketed 140,000 truancy, civil, traffic, class C misdemeanors, drivers license, and mental health cases as a Justice of the Peace for Collin County(OCA-Office of Court Admin.).  More important, his wealth of judicial experience are the results he has consistently delivered to our community.  Among educators in Plano, Frisco, and Allen, his reputation for helping students stay in school and graduate is renowned.  His work has saved local communities over a million dollars in state school revenue that would have otherwise been lost because of truancy.  An even greater testament to his success is watching students who have stood before his bench interact with him after he has helped turn their lives around.  Since 1991, Judge Payton has presided over 30,000 truancy cases of which have not only helped positively impact thousands of young peoples lives, but has helped save thousands of lives.

Judge John Payton’s  passion for helping young people goes well beyond his judicial responsibilities.  He is deeply involved in a wide variety of community activities. In 2009 he founded and is the director of the Collin County Justice of the Peace Food Bank to help the needy families who come through his court as well as local food pantries.  Seven years ago Judge Payton and Al Silva started S.O.S(students on service) through his truancy court.  This was created to assist students with their community service hours through the Southern Collin County Habitat for Humanity program.  They have built six homes for needy families and donated over $1500.00 towards the construction of the homes. On the Saturdays he is not building homes they are painting homes for the elderly through community standards, landscaping and cleaning with Keep Allen Beautiful and the Allen Community Outreach. 15 years ago he started a Teen Court Program helping first time offenders by allowing them to have their peers assign community service hours in lieu of a fine.  Three years ago Judge Payton, with the approval of the Commissioners Court, launched Teen Court in all 5 JP Courts and the City of Frisco.

Professionally, Judge Payton has served on the scholarship committee and was a Director for the Board of the Texas Justice of the Peace and Constable’s Assoc. He is also the past president and vice president for the North Texas Justice of the Peace & Constable’s Assoc. The Commission on Judicial Conduct has appointed Judge Payton as a Mentor Judge to assist other judges who sometimes need professional development.  In the last two years Judge Payton has brought County services to the City of Allen, Frisco Independent School Districts Career & Technology Center, and the City of Lucas providing the local taxpayers with county services for the first time. Later this spring Judge Payton will use his international college debate experience and his back ground as a member of the National Parliamentary Debate Association to develop a local Urban Debate League that will be launched in charter schools.  It is a proven and highly successful model to help economically depressed students discover and develop academic potential through the skills debate helps build.  Judge Payton is the candidate with experience and results and we ask that you vote JP for JP in November.

Another great turnout! While the weather was cold, wet, and just down right miserable, our numbers are still strong and faithful. It’s been a true blessing watching people that I have helped in their youth and/or their parents, step up and support a cause that we all believe in.
